Why Mesh WiFi Beats Traditional Routers
A single router broadcasts WiFi from one point. The further you get from it, the weaker the signal. Mesh WiFi systems use multiple access points spread throughout your home, creating a seamless blanket of connectivity. No dead zones, no signal drops, no switching between networks.
In 2026, the average home has 25+ connected devices — phones, laptops, tablets, smart speakers, TVs, cameras, thermostats, and more. Traditional routers struggle to handle this load across multiple rooms. Mesh systems are designed for exactly this scenario.
We tested five mesh systems in a 2,500 sq ft two-story home with concrete interior walls — a challenging environment that exposes WiFi weaknesses.
1. eero Pro 6E (3-pack) — Best Overall
Price: $499 | Rating: 9.4/10
Amazon's eero Pro 6E delivers the best combination of speed, coverage, and ease of setup. WiFi 6E support means it uses the uncongested 6 GHz band for blazing fast connections with supported devices, while maintaining excellent performance on 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz for older devices.
Speed results: In our 2,500 sq ft test home, the eero Pro 6E maintained over 800 Mbps on 6 GHz devices in every room. Even on the 5 GHz band two walls away from the nearest node, speeds stayed above 400 Mbps. The 2.4 GHz band for IoT devices consistently delivered 100+ Mbps.
Setup: The eero app walks you through setup in under 10 minutes. Place the nodes, plug them in, and the app handles the rest. Network configuration, device prioritization, parental controls, and guest networks are all managed through the intuitive app.
Smart home: Built-in Zigbee hub connects compatible smart home devices without a separate hub. Alexa integration allows voice control of network features.
Best for: Most homes up to 6,000 sq ft (3-pack). The balance of speed, coverage, ease of use, and smart home integration is unmatched.
2. Google Nest WiFi Pro (3-pack) — Best for Google Homes
Price: $399 | Rating: 9.0/10
If your home runs on Google Assistant, the Nest WiFi Pro integrates seamlessly. Each node doubles as a Google smart speaker — ask it to play music, control smart devices, set timers, or get answers, all while providing mesh WiFi coverage.
Performance: WiFi 6E support with solid speeds — 650+ Mbps on 6 GHz throughout our test home. Not quite as fast as the eero Pro 6E in raw throughput, but fast enough for any real-world use case including 4K streaming, video calls, and large file transfers.
The speaker advantage: In a 3-pack setup, you get three Google smart speakers distributed throughout your home at no extra cost. If you would buy Nest Mini speakers anyway, the Nest WiFi Pro is effectively cheaper than eero plus separate speakers.
Privacy: Google's privacy controls let you easily pause internet for specific devices, manage safe search settings, and view which devices are connected. No subscription required for basic features.
Best for: Google Home households that want mesh WiFi and distributed smart speakers in one system.
3. TP-Link Deco XE75 (3-pack) — Best Value
Price: $299 | Rating: 8.8/10
TP-Link's Deco XE75 delivers WiFi 6E performance at the lowest price in this category. At $100 per node, it makes whole-home mesh WiFi accessible to budget-conscious buyers without sacrificing modern standards.
Speed: 580+ Mbps on 6 GHz, 350+ Mbps on 5 GHz throughout our test home. Not the fastest, but more than sufficient for a household with multiple 4K streams, video calls, and gaming happening simultaneously.
Coverage: Each node covers up to 2,500 sq ft. The 3-pack handles homes up to 7,500 sq ft — the largest coverage area on our list.
Features: AI-driven mesh dynamically routes traffic to the least congested band and node. Built-in antivirus and IoT protection. Comprehensive parental controls with age-appropriate presets.
Trade-offs: The app is functional but less polished than eero or Google. No smart speaker functionality. Design is utilitarian rather than premium.
Best for: Large homes on a budget. The best coverage-per-dollar of any mesh system.
4. ASUS ZenWiFi BQ16 Pro — Best for Power Users
Price: $699 | Rating: 9.2/10
The ZenWiFi BQ16 Pro is the fastest mesh system we tested, with WiFi 7 support delivering theoretical speeds up to 30 Gbps across its quad-band system. For homes with gigabit or multi-gigabit internet connections and users who demand maximum throughput, this is the system to buy.
Raw speed: WiFi 7's 320 MHz channels and 4K-QAM modulation pushed speeds above 2 Gbps on supported devices in the same room as a node. Even in distant rooms, 5 GHz speeds stayed above 700 Mbps. The dedicated backhaul band ensures node-to-node communication never competes with client devices.
Power user features: 10 Gbps WAN port for multi-gig internet plans. Advanced QoS with per-device bandwidth allocation. VPN server and client built-in. Real-time traffic monitoring and network analysis. AiProtection Pro security (powered by Trend Micro, free for life).
Trade-offs: Expensive, larger nodes than competitors, and the feature-rich interface can overwhelm casual users. WiFi 7 client devices are still limited in 2026, meaning you may not see full speed benefits for another year or two.
Best for: Tech enthusiasts, power users with multi-gig internet, and early WiFi 7 adopters.
5. Netgear Orbi 770 (2-pack) — Best for Large Homes
Price: $549 | Rating: 8.9/10
The Orbi 770 uses a dedicated tri-band architecture with a separate backhaul channel for node communication. This means every bit of your WiFi bandwidth is available for your devices — none is used for mesh overhead. For large homes where nodes are far apart, this architecture maintains speed better than competitors.
Coverage: The 2-pack covers up to 5,500 sq ft with consistent performance. In our test, speeds dropped only 15% from the router to the satellite node — the smallest degradation of any system tested.
Performance: WiFi 6E with 520+ Mbps throughout our test home on 5 GHz. The dedicated backhaul maintained strong performance even when 30+ devices were connected simultaneously.
Design: The tall, cylindrical nodes are larger than competitors but have a premium feel. Each includes a 2.5 Gbps WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports — more wired ports than most mesh systems.
Best for: Large homes (3,000+ sq ft) where maintaining speed over distance is critical.
Comparison
